That creepy pale boy with the bright red number 2 across his eyes from the poster might feel a little clichéd, but I have to admit—it still freaks me out.

Before I went to the cinema, one of my friends actually told me not to watch it. Naturally, I asked why. Their reason? “Don’t go see it lah—it’s the same as Ju-On.” I was honestly speechless. Of course it is similar. It is the English-language adaptation of Ju-On! Same curse, different language.

Horror has never really been my thing, and anyone who has watched a scary movie with me knows it. I don’t scream, hug the person next to me, or make dramatic noises. Instead, I scratch the cinema chair, drink ridiculous amounts of water whenever a scary scene starts, and wave my hands at the screen like the characters can somehow see me warning them.

I did not watch the first The Grudge because, at the time, I had no kaki to watch horror movies with. Weirdly enough, I had seen the first Japanese Ju-On, but missed its sequel. Then I skipped The Grudge and went straight to The Grudge 2. So yes, I somehow ended up with the best—and most confusing—of both worlds.

The story kicks off with three schoolgirls: Allison (Arielle Kebbel), Trish (Jennifer Beals), and Miyuki (Misako Uno). Allison is the unpopular girl who just wants to fit in, so when Trish and Miyuki dare her to enter the cursed house, she goes along with it. Big mistake. After telling her the gruesome story behind the house, they trick her into entering a room connected to the attic which is the same place where the former owner brutally murdered his wife.

From there, everything goes horribly wrong. The girls start seeing Kayako (Takako Fuji) and Toshio (Ohga Tanaka), and if you know anything about this series, you know that spotting either of them is never good news. Once those ghostly faces appear, someone is usually about to die or vanish without a trace.

The movie also picks up Karen Davis’s story from the previous film. Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is being held in a hospital after setting the cursed house on fire. A fire that also killed her boyfriend. Her sister, Aubrey Davis (Amber Tamblyn), is sent to Tokyo by their mother to bring her home. At the hospital, Aubrey meets Eason (Edison Chen), the reporter who pulled Karen from the burning house.

Karen thinks she has found a way to stop the curse, but she dies before she can do anything about it. At first glance, it looks like suicide but, of course, nothing in The Grudge is ever that simple. Aubrey and Eason begin digging for the truth, while Eason starts feeling as though something is watching him.

Meanwhile, Miyuki disappears and Trish goes through her own nightmare. Allison eventually returns to the United States, but guess what? She does not come back alone. The curse has followed her home and it is clearly not planning to stay quiet.

After Eason dies, Aubrey becomes even more determined to stop Kayako. She goes looking for Kayako’s mother, hoping to find the source of the curse and finally end it. Unfortunately, that search only leads her closer to her own death.

Overall, the movie feels very similar to the Japanese version, and yes, I did find parts of it scary. Those huge eyes covered in thick black eyeliner, paired with the pale blue skin, definitely do the job. It proves that horror does not always need blood and gore. Sometimes all it takes is a ghost standing silently in the corner to make you want to look away.

That said, I could not help laughing every time someone decided to enter the house. Seriously, why would anyone go in there? The Hollywood version has more polished effects, but the Japanese original is still much scarier to me. There is something about its silence and slower pacing that makes the whole curse feel more real.

And can we talk about the doorknobs? Every time someone opens the burnt house, look closely. The doors are completely charred (black like charcoal) but the knobs are shiny, spotless, and look brand new. Not a speck of dirt anywhere. In a movie full of ghosts and supernatural curses, those perfect doorknobs might actually be the least believable part.

So, is The Grudge 2 worth watching? If you enjoy creepy ghosts, cursed houses, and the kind of horror that makes you nervous about dark corners, then yes… preferably with a few brave friends beside you. It has some genuinely unsettling moments, even if it never quite reaches the haunting level of the Japanese original. It did not keep me awake all night, but it definitely made attics, pale children, and strangely clean doorknobs feel a lot more suspicious.

It just did not do it for me… despite all the hype surrounding the movie. I went in really wanting to be moved, especially because I have so much respect for Nicolas Cage. But scene after scene, I kept waiting for that emotional punch and it never really came. After Oliver Stone disappointed me with Alexander, I cannot say I was completely surprised… but I was still hoping this one would prove me wrong. By the end, I felt more frustrated than touched.

I understand what the filmmakers were trying to do. They wanted to show how people survived something unimaginable, how brave they were, and how courage, family and love helped them keep going. I respect that, and thinking about what the real people went through honestly makes my heart feel heavy. Their experiences deserve to be told with care. But somehow, all the hope and family drama started to overshadow what the movie was really about. This was September 11, 2001… a truly terrible day that changed thousands of lives forever. I wanted to feel the grief, shock and helplessness of that day more deeply, but the movie kept pulling me towards a much smaller, more comforting story.

Still, I must say I really liked the opening. We see the police officers starting their patrols, people rushing around the city, and New York slowly waking up like it is just another normal day. Then we get those quiet, slow shots of the World Trade Center… and because we already know what is coming, I felt this awful feeling in my stomach. The calmness made me anxious because every ordinary moment felt borrowed. The muted colours, the pacing and all those little everyday details worked really well for me. I was completely drawn in at this point, and this is where the movie scores its first two stars.

The moment I saw the plane’s shadow moving across the buildings, my whole body tensed up. I thought… okay, something intense is about to happen. Not because I wanted some big action scene, but I expected the movie to bring us closer to the fear, confusion and scale of that moment. To my disappointment, not much was actually shown. Most of it came through walkie-talkie conversations and the same news footage we have already seen so many times. I could feel my interest slipping, which made me feel guilty because the real event was so devastating. I understand why they did not want to sensationalise the attacks, but somehow the scene left me emotionally outside, watching from a distance.

From that point onwards, the movie focuses almost completely on Port Authority officers John McLoughlin (Nicolas Cage) and Will Jimeno (Michael Peña). Their survival story is incredible, and of course I felt for them and their families. Whenever their loved ones appeared, I could feel the fear and uncertainty they were carrying. But honestly, I think the film’s decision to stay almost entirely with these two men was its biggest mistake. The focus becomes so narrow that the wider tragedy does not merely fade—it is pushed aside. Thousands of victims, survivors, rescuers and families were affected that day, yet the film barely gives them space to exist. I know this was never meant to tell every story, but it still felt wrong to shrink an event of such enormous scale into a familiar two-man survival drama. Their story deserved to be told, but not in a way that made almost everyone else feel invisible.

A huge part of the movie is basically the two men trapped under the rubble, talking to keep each other awake while their families wait for news. I know those moments were important, and I cannot even imagine how terrifying, painful and lonely the real experience must have been. There were times when I genuinely felt scared for them. But as a movie… it started to feel very repetitive and very slow. I became restless, then frustrated, and I hated that I was feeling bored while watching a story based on such a heartbreaking event. I kept wishing the film would pull back and show us more of what was happening to everyone else around them.

Honestly, when it got too slow, I started wondering what sort of movie I was watching. Was this World Trade Center, or was I watching Armageddon or Ladder 49? I felt confused, disconnected and, to be honest, quite disappointed. I wanted the movie to leave me shaken and reflective, but instead I kept noticing the familiar Hollywood rescue-drama formula. That style might work for some people, and that is fair, but for me it pulled the movie away from the real scale and seriousness of the event. The more sentimental it became, the more uneasy I felt.

But I must give credit where it is due. The thick dust, twisted metal, broken concrete and darkness under the debris looked very convincing. The scene where the building comes down around McLoughlin was especially intense and felt painfully real. I could almost feel the weight of the rubble and the panic of being trapped with no idea whether help would come. Those were the rare moments when my chest tightened and the danger truly hit me… so yes, that is another one and a half stars from me.

In the end, I respect McLoughlin and Jimeno’s survival story, but the warm Hollywood ending just did not sit right with me when so many families never got the same reunion. World Trade Center has sincere intentions and a few powerful moments, but its narrow focus and slow pacing left me more frustrated than moved. I would recommend it if you enjoy emotional survival dramas, but if you are looking for a fuller, harder-hitting portrayal of September 11, this may not be the one.

If you enjoy fast cars, over-the-top comedy and enough chaos to cause a traffic jam, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby is well worth watching. Will Ferrell is at his ridiculous best, while Sacha Baron Cohen (better known to many as Ali G) brings his own wonderfully quirky energy. Think of it as a louder, wilder and much sillier live-action version of Cars, with fewer life lessons and considerably more shouting.

The movie follows Ricky Bobby, a NASCAR legend who seems destined to race from day one. He is even born in the back seat of a souped-up Chevelle, because apparently a normal hospital entrance would have been far too slow. He loves speed from an early age, and his father’s famous advice, “If you ain’t first, you’re last,” soon becomes the motto he lives by. It is not exactly sensible life coaching, but it certainly keeps things moving.

Ricky and his best friend, Cal Naughton Jr., start out as pit crew members for a struggling NASCAR team. Then, out of nowhere, Ricky gets the chance of a lifetime when he is asked to take the wheel. He goes for it, races without fear and quickly becomes one of the fastest and wildest drivers on the track. One minute he is changing tyres; the next, he is collecting trophies. Talk about a speedy promotion!

When Ricky makes it to the top, he brings Cal along as his racing partner. Cal is incredibly loyal and is always there to help Ricky win, even when he could take the victory himself. But fame and success soon go to Ricky’s head and there is plenty of room in that helmet. With money, attention and what looks like the perfect family life, he becomes arrogant and will not even let Cal have his own moment to shine.

Then Jean Girard arrives and shakes everything up. He is a stylish, eccentric Formula One champion who listens to jazz and casually sips espresso while racing as you do when speeding around a track at terrifying speeds. Sacha Baron Cohen plays him brilliantly, making Jean the perfect rival for Ricky: calm, confident, completely unconventional and ridiculously funny. Watching Ricky’s loud, all-American swagger collide with Jean’s cool sophistication leads to some of the movie’s funniest and most absurd moments.

Ricky becomes so desperate to beat Jean that he pushes himself too far and ends up in a major crash. After that, he loses all confidence behind the wheel and even becomes convinced that he is on fire. Suddenly, the fearless speed demon is driving slower than a tortoise with nowhere to be! As if that were not bad enough, his wife leaves him for Cal, his best friend takes his place, and the life Ricky once knew falls apart faster than a badly organised pit stop.

Of course, you can probably guess that a comeback is waiting somewhere around the final bend but watching Ricky wobble his way there is half the fun. He has to rebuild his confidence, face his rival and realise that there is more to life than always finishing first. His father may need to update that motto.

Final verdict: Talladega Nights has everything you want from a fun comedy fast-paced racing, gloriously ridiculous dialogue and characters you will not forget anytime soon, no matter how hard you try. It never takes itself too seriously, and that is exactly what makes it such a blast. If you need an easy movie-night pick or a quick mood boost, grab some snacks, press play and let Ricky Bobby do the driving. Honestly, it is safer that way!
