Project Crossroad: The Mummy

project crossroad

Looks like the recent Tom Cruise movie has awaken the mummies mode in us.
The mummies were wrapped in rolls and rolls of bandage and during Halloween, rolls of tissue paper were used in wrapping themselves up.

We recently had this team building activity where we needed to wrap ourselves up.
Some were obviously good at it, while some mummies are showing way too much skin.
As such, I was inspired to create this theme.

Brian’s sheep has turned in to shummy this week.
Sheep totally wrapped up with rolls and rolls of bandage.
His sheep mummy looks well wrapped and I would award him the best mummy wrapper as shummy still looks totally cute and adorable despite being wrapped fully.
By the way Brian, would you ever consider to print these on tees?
I want I want!

Mummy - done by brian wong

My version of mummy somehow was too busy dieting.
Only bones were left behind and an eye popping out.
The message of the artwork? Please eat more and stop dieting.
Most of the time, my characters love to show off their belly but in this case, it seems that they could only show their bone belly.

Mummy - done by velverse

Takeru finally submit his artwork on time.
At one go, he submitted all the artwork for this week and from last week theme.
So let us start with his version of mummy.

He said he was angry when he was drawing it.
It was no wonder one can feel the anger and stress of the mummy but it still manage to do a  peace ✌ sign.

Mummy - done by takeru

What is up next week?
Project theme: Fairy
Project description: A more fantasy and dreamy theme. I love fairies as they are often associated with magical powers and elegance. So, calling all magical people, please do your magic.
Project deadline: 23 August 2006, Wednesday.

Anyone else interested to join, email your artwork to me.
Don’t be shy, let us all share our ideas and so something fun.

The X-Night

Backdated post. Actual event took place on 26 May 2006.

It was the night to watch the X-Men. We got to see the first show. Hemm… it was not as good as I hope or expect it to be (read my review here)

It was a packed day. The cinema was so packed that we have to sit down and wait so long. Thus, we decided to take some pictures. Hehe… right, I saw Winson busy SMS-ing. I thentook his phone and just start snapping. Hahaha… right, well that is what we do. Who ever have a camera phone, we shall flood it.

We were quite hungry as we didn’t take dinner before that. We just rush to Sunway Pyramid and watch X-Men. So yeap, we munch on chocolates and popcorns in the cinema.

Right after movie, we all sat down at a mamak nearby and ordered our food. While waiting for the food to arrive, obviously there are more reasons to take pictures. Hehe… yeap, take loads of picture of Winson. Yeah, it’s the first time I’m seeing him. He is Gigi’s interns. So yeah, I’ve been chatting with him for a while and I finally get the chance to meet him.

A funny guy that likes to joke and share the same hobby like me. Yeah, we all like to watch movie 😀

So right… from now onwards, more of his photos here 🙂

Backdated post. Actual event took place on 07 May 2006.

There is always time for Suzi! It’s a great place and I am not bored of going there over and over again.. eating the same food over and over again… posting the same old pictures of the food. I won’t say it’s the best ever place to eat but well… it’s good enough to make me want more and come back.

This time around, I am bringing first-timers. Right… first time for Brian, Jon and their friend Andrew. Hehe… Andrew is an intern working in Jon’s place. He is actually from Canada, so yeah… I must bring him try out local food.

makan makan at suzi's

Wooo.. the otak otak was good! It was marvelous. I wanted more.. more and more… all for myself. Too bad the stall don’t open regularly. Haha… the stall open as they wished I guess. So yeah.. I was pretty lucky. The claypot nasi briyani ayam is cool. Each cook individually in a claypot taste simply cool. It comes with some curry and indian style coslaw. I somehow prefer the claypot nasi briyani kambing more. Hehe.. more spicy The satay was the another I won’t miss out food here. I think it was good. So good that nothing was left on the table. Nothing I must say. Everything was being whacked up.

makan makan at suzi's

After finish eating.. we sat down, chit chat a little about cultures in canada and over here in malaysia. It was fun at times listening to Andrew’s story. The juciest part, he told us he was one of the cowboys in the restaurant/bar in Brokeback Mountain. No kidding! I still hasn’t watch the movie yet or else I will surely print screen that particular scene and show you guys. So yes… how interesting, I ate dinner with some star! *blink blink*

Project Crossroad: Mermaid

project crossroad

Inspired by the movie Lady In The Water, we decided to draw we all have heard of, read of and even watched on TV over and over when we were kids.
Yes, that’s right. You’ve got it right –  the mermaid.

It is said to be a half human half fish.
I have not seen one in my lifetime before but there are some to claim they have and it’s true.
And I think the closest thing that are similar to a mermaid is the Merlion, an iconic symbol of Singapore.
A Merlion is a mythical creature with a lion’s head and the body of a fish.

If Singapore has a Merlion, Brian had his own version – Mersheep.
I love the colour tone. The calming and mystical blue gives the illustration a calming feel.
The Mersheep also had a fighting fish vibe which has a long and flowing tail.
The  eyes of the Mersheep looks like two fried eggs, which gives it a humorous touch.

mermaid - done by brian wong

While it was always said that mermaids don’t eat fish cause they don’t eat their own kind.
But my version of mermaid is totally different.
She loves to eat seafood and fish 🍣. It’s just like Azli, our ikan (fish) that eats fish 🐠.
Haha , that’s right. Seafood is just too yummy.
And I love this seaweed hairstyle. Who needs hair when you can have seaweed hair.
So green, so IN!

As always, Takeru is fashionably late with his mermaid work.
He submitted his “Oh So Kissable” mermaid.
Takeru is always known for his bold colour choice.
This time, a yellowish gold theme.
From gold hair to scales, so bling, so precious.
A beautiful gem indeed.

Dragon Tiger Gate

Dragon Tiger Gate (2006)

Movie Title: 龍虎門 (Dragon Tiger Gate)
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/10)
Year: 2006
Dragon Tiger Gate official site: http://www.dragontigergatemovie.com/

Yet another movie adapted from a comic book. This time around is a movie adapted from a famous comic, Dragon Tiger Gate. Yeap, it’s a famous comic that is selling for 35 years.

Everyone who loves to watch the comic is dying hard to see it. Those who never even pay attention or heard of the movie is also going crazy over the movie. Their trailer manage to catch people’s attention and the “I WANT TO SEE” soon become the most frequent word I hear each time I mention the title.

With the 3 good looking Hong Kong actors, it’s like a super duper plus points. It’s been some time since we last saw Nicholas Tse. Yes, as far as my memory goes, the last time I saw him was in The Promise. Donnie Yuen in SPL and Shawn Yue in Infernal Affairs.

Dragon Tiger Gate have a similar to Marvel style opening. With flicks and pages from the comic, the texture and drawing and all… yeah, it just reminds me of Marvel movies opening. Yeah… it’s an obvious opening that lets everyone know it was an adaptation from the famous comic itself. I think the opening was okay except the fact of the font just doesn’t match the opening. But well, that was soon forgiven when the movie starts.

The CG department mixed and match some Hong Kong skyscrapers with digital buildings. Well, I would say it is quite a rare scene in the Hong Kong movie industry. The movie first introduce what and how Dragon Tiger Gate came about. Dragon Tiger Gate is some sort of martial art school where people learn and practice martial arts to protect their loved ones and prevent themselves from being bullied. The founder of Dragon Tiger Gate finally passed away and was left with his two son, elder son Wong Siu Long aka Dragon Wong (Donnie Yen) and youngest son, Wong Siu Fu aka. Tiger Wong (Nicholas Tse). Everything begins when Dragon Wong left Dragon Tiger Gate.

In some misunderstanding circumstances, Tiger Wong got to know Ma Siu Ling (Dong Jie). Ma Siu Ling thought Tiger Wong was her ex-classmate and vice versa. After a long chat, they both notice they got the wrong person. Coincidently, Dragon Wong work for Ma Siu Ling’s dad, Ma Kun (Kuan Tai Chen) who apparently is a mobster.

Right after that Tiger Wong walks in to a restaurant to join his friends, only to notice there is some fight between the two mobster (Ma Kun is one of them). Apparently, a Japanese secret society headed by a formidable villain called Shibumi is the leader of the underground world. Each year, only the mobster that receives a plate from Shibumi will take control of the and do business. Thus, the plate was entrusted to Ma Kun. Ma Kun’s followers were fighting with Tiger Wong downstairs and cause a havoc. The plate was then picked up by Tiger’s friend.

The fighting scene soon start when Tiger Wong fights a group of Ma Kun’s follower. The peak came when he faced his brother Dragon Wong (Tiger Wong didn’t know he was his brother). Obviously Tiger Wong lost but is set free. Dragon Wong then promises Ma Kun that he will get the plate back.

There is where the best fights in the movie come about. The fight in the Japanese restaurant is cool. Dragon Wong got the plate back from Tiger Wong. However one of Ma Kun’s top follower bring a big group of people and try to kill Tiger Wong. Being very angry, Dragon Wong fights with them. Dragon Wong’s 18 Palm was simply amazing. There, Tiger Wong gets to know a new friend Turbo Shek (Shawn Yue). He also gets to know that Dragon Wong is eventually his elder brother.

Turbo Shek then follows Tiger Wong back to Dragon Tiger Gate, hoping that Wong Jing Lung (Yuen Wah) would accept him and allow him to stay in Dragon Tiger Gate. Everything was going just fine until Dragon Wong persuade Ma Kun stop being a mobster.

Shibumi was very angry when Ma Kun decides to return the plate to him and he commanded people to kill Dragon Wong and Ma Kun. Rosa (Xiao Ran Li) was sent to kill Dragon Wong. However she couldn’t do it as she is deeply in love with Dragon Wong. This scene was a little spoiler as the first sentence that came our from Rosa in that scene was “Have you ever do it (sex) in the water?” Argh… what sort of script is this? Since she couldn’t set herself to kill him, she asked him to make a tattoo on her body to delay his time so that he could not save Ma Kun. Being upset and angry he “palmed” Rosa.

By the time Dragon Wong reaches the baseball court, Ma Kun is dead. Ma Siu Ling was crying badly. There was this big fight again when Dragon Wong decides to kill everyone that came for Ma Kun. He was badly hurt. But amazingly he still manage to carry Ma Siu Ling. I never understand. Ma Siu Ling wasn’t hurt, so why exactly do Dragon Wong needs to carry her? Doesn’t Ma Siu Ling deserve to help carry Dragon Wong instead?

He then carry Ma Siu Ling back to Dragon Tiger Gate. Dragon Wong then disappear and fall in to a big bush. There he have lots of flash back. When he decided to go back, Dragon Tiger Gate was in a big mess. Shibumi just came and tries to challenge them. Nicholas Tse has a broken leg and was hurt, Turbo Shek fainted somewhere while Wong Jing Lung died terribly. He was squashed till death by the Dragon Tiger Gate’s signboard.

Wong Jing Lung once told Ma Siu Ling that if anything happens, she will have to carry whoever that is injured and goes to a hill to find a monk to help save them. She did and she manages to save Tiger Wong and Turbo Shek. Meanwhile, Rosa was given a choice to either save herself or Dragon Wong with a medicine from Shibumi. She choose to save Dragon Wong.

The exciting part came when Turbo Shek and Tiger Wong who learnt their special skills in the hill decided to look for Shibumi and seek for revenge. Obviously the fight scenes were cool. However the both of them isn’t Shibumi’s competitor. It’s when not long after that Dragon Wong came in to the scene and saves the day.

The ending of the movie was so predictable and I think a little boring. They could have been done in a better way. Overall, I think the fight scenes were quite good especially Donnie Yen’s stunts. Yeah, I surely have no doubt about it as he is a martial art actor. Some of Nicholas scene were rather fake and slow. Not to even mention it seems as if the villain is waiting for him to finish kicking the others. I mean back in reality, he would have been killed. Villains don’t wait. The storyline was rather weak as there were so many questions about the plot. But the saddest part of all, the director fails to link the emotional section and the action section together properly. Giving this movie lots of loopholes.

One thing for sure, they zoom in too many times to the phones of the users. Yes, it’s as if it’s a Nokia ad! Right, maybe they sponsor the movie a bit.. doubt that.. with the amount of zoom in’s I think they sponsor quite a huge amount. It somehow spoils the movie. Everyone in the cinema was laughing each time they zoom in to the phones.

Yeah.. the best part is, I still don’t understand how come Shibumi have so little followers. Most of them were being killed in the baseball court. Rosa died… and no one left. It makes Tiger Wong and Turbo Shek goes ramping in to Shibumi’s place so easily. What kind of villain doesn’t have lots of followers? Argh… it still gets on my nerves!

The Lake House

The Lake House (2006)

Movie Title: The Lake House
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (7/10)
Year: 2006
The Lake House official site: http://www.thelakehousemovie.com/

Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock… the last time I see the collaboration between them was in the movie Speed. At that point of time, Sandra was still a newbie in the industry while Keanu is already a hottie that makes girls scream at the top of their lungs.

Unknown to many people, this movie is actually a remake of a Korean movie “Il Mare”. Il Mare is the Italian name for the Korean movie Siwore. I totally love the Korean version of the poster. It has more feel compare to this remake poster. Which I think lack out a lot of feelings. They have great actors and actress and all but the poster just didn’t do the job to it’s fullest potential.

Even then, the movie wasn’t really highly promoted and both Sandra and Keanu are well aware that this movie is not those movie that comes out on the premier and blow everyone off and top the box office. Is one of those movie which will touch your heart. Ring a bell, not a big bell, but is enough to keep you alert and aware it is all happening and is all around us.

The story stars with Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock) moved out of a house by the lake. As she left, she leaves behind a mail in the mailbox so that the next tenant could forward her mails to her.

The movie soon begins when Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves), an architect, buys the house and move in. He then saw the mail in the mailbox but is puzzled since the house have been empty and no one has stayed there for more than 2 years. Alex then reply the Kate’s mails by writing a mail and putting it back in his own mailbox (the best part that I never understand, how could you mail mails to Kate and put it in own mailbox hoping that Kate would come and get it?). Seriously it does happen before Keanu continues to investigate deeper in to what is going on.

After a series of back and forth correspondences, Kate and Alex soon realize that they are living 2 years apart, Kate is living in the year 2004 while Alex in the year 2002. After some testing, Kate and Alex discover that the mailbox at lake house can pass objects and mails through it. And soon it has became their communication tool.

By communicating through the mailbox, Kate asks Alex to retrieve a valuable gift she lost two years ago. It was a book Kate’s father left her, which he gets for her. Alex went and get it for her only to see her for the first time. Oh yeah… forget to even mention, they both share the same dog named Jack.

Ever since then Alex has been repeatedly popping up in Kate’s life (2002). He even kissed her on her birthday party which makes Kate’s boyfriend Morgan (Dylan Walsh) upset. There and then, Alex did a lot of things for Kate like grow a tree in front of her house, draw some graffiti on walls and the list goes on.

Not long after that, Alex’s father (Christopher Plummer), a noted architect, died. Kate bought a book which Alex’s father wrote to tell Alex how much his dad actually loved him. Right, Alex have arguments with his dad constantly and thinks his father never cared for the family.

They then decides to date each other. Kate asked Alex to reserve a table at Il Mare (how sweet, they even pay their respect to the original version of the movie by naming the restaurant). Il Mare is one of the best restaurant in town and it is so not possible to get a place without months of reservation. Somehow, Alex didn’t show up and Kate starts to lost faith and thinks that the “distant” relationship is not working. She soon stops communicating and mailing him.

They both then lead their own life. Kate runs into her ex-fiancé on the road and they just hit it off. They stayed in and one day, Kate accidently stumbles on the book she has lost bellow her floor wood tiles.

As Kate and Morgan plans to renovate their new home, they found Alex and his brother’s firm. She then found out that Alex was dead that same day 2 years ago. Kate suddenly realizes, on that day, she witnessed a car striking a pedestrian and killing him. Kate rushes to the hospital to find out that Alex was the pedestrian. She immediately rushes to the mailbox and sends a letter telling him not to go and she stood there crying. The scene returns to the beginning of the movie, where Kate is eating with her mother at the park across the street. Alex then show up in and hug and kissed Kate. Yes they finally met.

There isn’t much to complain about the acting. Both were A list actors and actress. They both have this chemistry between them making the whole movie so real. I totally love how they used Chicago as their location bringing out the beautiful buildings. I even love how they set the movie to give it a cold and calm feel. I think the lake house itself was a beautiful masterpiece. Really.. except I still can’t figure out how the maple tree can be inside the house. I mean not that it is not possible. It’s a house on the lake.. and yet I don’t see roots or tree trunks coming from the bottom.

I would really have to say it is a not to miss beautiful movie that has beautiful cinematography. Well.. the only factor that makes this movie a little confusing is the leap between the 2 years as some shots shows the 2002 scenes.. some the 2004 scenes, some the 2006 scenes and it goes forward and back. But then again… I still don’t get how Keanu is supposed to meet Sandra at the Il Mare restaurant although he make a booking for 2 years ahead as he is 2 years behind time. And well… I really don’t get how he could come and hug and kiss Kate at the ending scene. It’s like.. okay you write a letter u mailed back to 2004 and u saved his life. Right.. he will be there and he survived. But how did he jump out to 2006 where Sandra was crying. I am still wondering… is it Sandra is in 2008 and Keanu is in 2006 (when the actual scene shown to us is when Keanu is in 2006 and Sandra is in 2006)?

But well… I will still see it over and over again. It’s one of those soft side of Keanu movies I like. Well I must say, if you like Sweet November(2001), I think you will like this movie too. Yeah… it’s been that long since I last saw Keanu Reeves acting in soft romantic movies.

Dine In At IKEA

IKEA is always a go to place for people who are tying to get minimalist and functional furnitures.
I personally find it the best place to shop for furniture and get inspired.

Aside from that, it is the best place for all of us to experience Swedish cuisine.
I was craving for their Swedish meatball so the only place to be at is IKEA.
In fact, this is the only place I know that served Swedish food.
Now, lets go!

Dine in at ikea
Dine in at ikea
Dine in at ikea

I have always loved their Swedish meatball and I needed extra gravy and cranberry sauce.
I never really love to mix anything sweet to my main course, but cranberry sauce with Swedish meatball is a must hair pair.
The first time I tried it was when a close friend of mine show me how to and explained how important cranberry sauce is to elevate the taste of the dish.
To date, I am still very grateful to him and I must say I learnt that never say no before trying.
Who knows how we will love new combinations and be brave to explore new taste.

When I was there, I suddenly decided to try something else aside meatball.
I had a hard time since most of the time I was thinking of meatballs and to battle the crave is not easy.
It was until I saw a big sign written “Chef’s recommendation” on the Roast Beef  and this is enough to move me to order one.

I love the overall presentation of the dish, 3 big and thick slices of roast beef place on top a mountain of French fries with sautéed diced onions, celery and carrots.
Carrots and beef are a perfect match. It’s like inseparable couple where both were meant to be.
The only down side was the roast beef is cold and some may not like it as the beefy taste and smell starts to build up.
Maybe next time I could ask them for some cranberry sauce. Would it make the dish better?

My sister ordered Poached Salmon. I didn’t manage to taste it since she finished it before I could give it a try.
She was too hungry and had the whole salmon to herself.
The poached salmon were accompanied with steamed broccoli and boiled potatoes as sides.
While my sister said it tasted OK, I was sceptical as the yellow colour sauce in a way disturbed me.
The colour is somehow too pastel yellow and is scary and the colour does not goes well with greens.

Project Crossroad: Tiki Doll

project crossroad

Every time I heard of the word Tiki it makes me laugh.
I am not sure why, the feeling just appear every time I heard it.
So I decided to use it as the theme for the week, but I think it must be a hard subject since we are only down to 2 submission.

Don’t worry, the show must go on, so I will still showcase what was submitted.

Brian didn’t fail to amaze me. Instead of a solo tiki, he submitted a couple tiki.
Hmm.. maybe not a couple but it comes in pairs.
It was his sheep troop praying to their sheep tiki called stiki.
I think it was cute especially the one on the right side that looks a little more bull looking.
Nice work! And look forward for more sheep.

Tiki Doll - done by brian

I have also submitted a tiki doll that loves a good casual tee and a pair of white adidas shoe.
Finally, something more grunge and messy.
Right, talk about modernism!

Edited on 2nd August 2006
Takeru submitted a very cute tiki, whereby he named it tikitake.
I totally fell in love with the colour combination.
The orange background with bright green tiki.
The little frog sitting on top of the character adds mood and cuteness to the character.
I especially love the wood grain texture that Takeru adds in.
Love, love love it. Para salute to him!

Another birthday dinner, this time it’s my little twin, Gigi’s birthday.
It was quite a mixed emotion celebration, as we are combining both a happy birthday celebration for Gigi and a farewell dinner for Evan.
Evan has moved to the States and was back for a week or so,  and he’s going to leave town again now.
This was the first and last time I am meeting him this time round since he was back.

Brian is the CEO (Chief Event Organizer) for this birthday dinner gathering and he booked a table in advance at Senditos Tapas.
Jon picked me up from office while Brian picked up Gigi and Winson.
We arrived first, followed by Brian since the birthday girl needs extra time to dress up .
It’s her big day after all. so dressing up is a must.

When we arrive, the waitress seated us at a cozy corner.
While waiting, we ordered their signature drink, Sangria  which is a delicious concoction of fruit juices, soda water, ice, fruit slices and either red or white wine that the waitress has introduced to us.
We also ordered a non-alcoholic version for Gigi since she can’t take alcohol.

We start ordering the moment the host and the birthday girl arrived as we are all seriously hungry.
Since we have quite a bit of people, we get to order many different type of tapas to share.
Some of it was funky and was  something that I have tried for the first time.

Tapas are generally small portions of hot or cold food served as part of the social scene in Spanish bars.
So yes, it’s more like small bites or snacks to go with beer and wine which is just great.

We ordered quite a number of dishes that has scallops in it since Gigi loves scallops!
By the end of the dinner, we were all full already and with the birthday cake we were burping and rubbing our tummy.
Brian took out the lovely square green tea cake with red bean cake.

While it is very Japanese style flavour, I still think it is a weird combination.
The strong green tea taste with a little bitter aftertaste and the sweet red bean taste.
While I find it weird, I must admit their decoration for the cake is on point.

Since Alan can’t join for dinner since he have to work overtime, then we asked him to join us for our next round.
We went to Brewball for some drinks and a few round of pool.

At Brewball, we took turns to play 2-3 rounds each before we sat down to chat with Evan.
It has been a while since we met so we have quite a bit to talk about.

It was a great night of games and chats since we it has been a while all of us can make it together to a gathering.
I guess we will have to wait another 5-6 months till the next time we can all gather together again since Evan will only be back by then.

I am different which makes me weird. I over think which makes me over sensitive. I am not sensible which makes me not reasonable
